Could Weight Loss be 80% Mindset? Or more?

Is mindset more important than you thought when losing weight?

38% UK citizens are currently attempting to lose weight (says research company Kantar). As they do, they turn to various diets and exercise programmes to achieve their goals. While diet and exercise play a crucial role in the process, weight loss is, to a huge extent, a matter of mindset. Could the 38% be more successful if they focussed more on mindset?

Today, we propose that the often-quoted statistic “weight loss is 80% nutrition and 20% exercise” should be changed simply to:
“weight loss is 80% mindset”.

Here’s why.

“Mindset” refers to the attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions that shape our behaviour, choices, and approach to life; it encompasses how we think about and approach our journey to a slimmer body. Our mental state and preparedness have a profound impact on the choices we make regarding our well-being, and how we think and feel can significantly influence our success. A strong and positive mindset can help set clear and achievable weight loss goals, and with the belief that you can achieve them, you're more likely to stay motivated throughout your weight loss journey. A resilient mindset can help you develop and maintain self-discipline, making it easier to adopt new habits. Weight loss is rarely a linear journey and you may face setbacks and plateaus; a robust mindset will help you bounce back from these challenges, rather than giving up. And finally, many people use food as a means of coping with stress or other emotions; a strong mindset can empower you to address underlying issues and manage emotions.

Here’s how to develop your mindset for lasting weight loss success.

  • Know your weight loss ‘why’ - get clear on why you want to lose weight.

  • Understand what led you to gain weight, and work to heal traumas.

  • Make a decision to lose weight. Decisions are super-powerful in helping you achieve your goals.

  • Set clear and achievable goals.

  • Shift your focus from the end result to the journey itself.

  • Be kind to yourself when you make mistakes or face setbacks.

  • Surround yourself with a supportive network.

  • Spend time each day setting your intentions.

  • Remind yourself with positive affirmations.

  • Celebrate your successes along the way.

Most people do none of the above before trying to lose weight. Then they wonder why their diet or weight loss programme didn’t work, or why they got bored of their exercise regime after a few weeks. Eatiful, on the other hand has all of these aspects, baked right in; it helps you understand your why for weight loss, set and achieve your goals, know where you’re headed as a certainty, celebrate your successes, build self compassion, and self esteem, and grow and hone your daily practice over time.

Any weight loss programme or method might work for some people and no weight loss programme or method works for everyone. But by working first on mindset, your chosen method is much more likely to be successful.

Imagine how much more successful your weight loss attempts could be if you spend less time worrying about rules, food prep, calories, tracking, and exercise, and more time getting your mindset right, so everything else feels way easier. Try Eatiful for the mindset focussed approach to weight loss. Put your mindset first.
