January Dieting? Try this instead
January 10th - 16th is National Obesity Awareness Week in the UK. Many of us have good intentions, yet most people give up their New Year’s Resolutions by January 17th. By then, they’re fed up of the January blues and found restrictive diets too hard.
Most people find weight loss hard, yet ludicrously, so many of us embark on a weight loss programme in January. So why is losing weight in January so difficult?
Resolutions - 62% of people make the same weight loss resolution every year. Worse still, 47% of those who want to lose weight believe they’ll regain it, even before they’ve started!
Money - We’ve just spent a lot on Christmas and are waiting for what seems like ever to be paid again. Not going out may help your finances but doesn’t do much for your mood.
Weather - In winter, we’re drawn to eating warmer, more comforting foods, and to eating more food altogether. Animal instinct drives us eat more and store a few extra pounds.
Going Out - The gym, an exercise class, or a run or walk may be a step too far in the cold.
Shorter Days - There’s just less time to do stuff. Stuff like exercise, shopping for delicious food, and cooking.
Taking Stock - Many take stock of their personal, health and professional goals at this time of year. For some this can be a great catalyst - for others, less so.
With all these factors in play, there’s no wonder most people find winter weight loss hard.
